Part of the chaos when leaving your house (or at least for me) is frantically packing the diaper bag to make sure I have everything for my kid(s) and myself. Keeping in mind the numerous scenarios of unexpected events that’ll surprise me, and double checking I have all my supermom tools to whip out.
TIP 1: Pack in advance. If you planned an outing for tomorrow, spend a little time tonight before bed prepping the diaper bag for your adventure to save you the mind power the next morning when you’re trying to get somewhere on time(ish). Prep the night before in effort to avoid last minute mayhem. If you swam into your sheets too early to prep, you can also do this first thing when you wake up over a strong coffee while the kids have breakfast.
TIP 2: Pack like Tetris. [the game… remember? I’m so witty]. Once you see the list below you’ll understand why it’s essential to pack efficiently and mindfully. The worst is rush packing. It’s less than ideal when you need to grab something quickly but have no idea where it is; so you dig dig dig dig until everything is a mess… including your mental state. Keep your sh*t in order for the sake of sanity.
I can’t reiterate this enough: you know what’s best for your child. We all have different perspectives on “necessities” and that’s fine. Stick to your intuition, and if you’re looking for some tips and guidance to help you along, here are some essentials that you can typically find in my diaper bag or travel backpack:
- Foldaway changing pad (can usually store the diapers)
- Small container wipes
- Simple change of clothes
- Bottles (if bottle fed)
- Formula dispenser filled w/ formula (if formula fed)
- Burp cloth
- Thin Swaddle blanket (multiple uses / amazing)
- Small tube diaper rash
- Bag for dirty diaper (Ziploc is even fine temporarily if you don’t want to invest in the specific)
- Favorite toy / activity
- Snacks + snack utensils (pouches are awesome – check expiration dates)!
- Hand sanitizer
- Water + snack for mommy
Depending on the weather, where your outing is, and how long you plan to be away – this inevitably determines what specific goodies + necessities you’ll need for the day. I’m sure you know this, but don’t forget the sunscreen even on cloudy days! Those rays cut through the clouds… they’re sneaky. Your list of essentials for a beach outing will look different, and I’ll get to that closer to the time!
And yes….. I was able to zip my bag:
Enjoy your outing — and good luck!
